Colleges and universities want LGBTQ students, faculty and staff to be out and proud as part of the diversity of the campus community.  The Campus Pride Index provides campuses the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ-friendly and take responsibility for continually improving their LGBTQ campus climate. 
 
The Campus Pride Index features LGBTQ student opportunities by highlighting the positive work within higher education across the country. Prospective students and families may choose the best LGBTQ campuses searching the tool based on area of study, cost, location, type of campus and LGBTQ-inclusive policy, programs and practice for their college search.

Commitment to LGBTQ Issues

The University of Pittsburgh strives to create and maintain an environment where all members of the University community are valued for their strengths, feel respected, and are able to thrive. The Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion facilitates the Trans Working Group at Pitt. The Transgender Working Group was established in 2016 in an effort to ensure that all University community members feel respected and valued. Our Synopsis

The Office for Inclusion and Belonging is a hub of campus activity for students. The Rainbow Alliance is a very active student group that supports current and prospective students who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Rainbow Alliance hosts social and educational events throughout the year. Staff members in the Office of inclusion and Belonging advise the Rainbow Alliance and help to facilitate Allies Network Training. Students have the opportunity to live in gender-inclusive housing. Students can request to live together regardless of sex or gender identity. Through the chosen name process, students can use their chosen name in most systems, as well as their campus ID. Community members are welcome to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Single-occupancy facilities are found in many campus buildings and can be used by all. Finally, the Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program is committed to promoting feminist and LGBTQIA activism, pedagogy and scholarship. Students who enroll in a GSWS course will be provided with the opportunity to explore historical development, changing representations of gender and sexuality and more.

Overall Campus Pride Index Score

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015. 

The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life  and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.

The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices.
