UNL recently hired a Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion, further exemplifying the commitment and importance of diversity & inclusion at UNL. We are continuing to expand our inclusion to all underrepresented identity populations, including LGBTQA+ individuals, while recognizing the importance of working at the intersections of identities. With the transitions taking place, the Director is included in the Student Affairs Senior Team and Directors meetings and retreats, which helps further give voice and amplify the voices of LGBTQA+ individuals. We have a diversity officer that works at the system-wide level, who also works to further diversity and inclusion for people of all gender identities and orientations, which has included the development of a system-wide manual for employees and webinars and other programming addressing LGBTQA+ identities and issues. The creation of the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Gender & Sexual Minorities was established (as of January 2019), which now joins the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on the Status of People of Color. A further sign of progress, is the three commissions working together. We have some great allies, advocates and collaborative partners on campus helping to continue to create the change we want to see in our world!

Our Synopsis
The LGBTQA+ center is the heart of the Q-munity at UNL! We provide a variety of programming, services, outreach, resources & advocacy. We host annual events that include a history month dinner, drag shows, Lavender Graduation & the Chancellor's Awards, and provide an annual Scholarship and student support fund. We also have a funded once a year social justice internship, funded by an alum. We have a peer mentor program, a library, provide presentations & workshops, have a hangout space & work collaboratively with campus departments, student & community groups. We also provide educational outreach through our use of social media. We have gender inclusive housing options, chosen name option & students can change their gender marker on records with a driver's license or passport. We have great partners, involvement opportunities, multiple student groups, and development opportunities. SOGI is included in our non-discrimination policy, student trans health care insurance and a Trans Care Clinic are available. We have an LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies minor; and Athletics is part of LGBT SportsSafe. The center now has an assistant director; and we provide educational presentations & workshops by request on and off campus. Involvement on campus is encouraged and visibility has improved. For many students, UNL is the most progressive environment they have been in and is reflected in our being chosen as the best college/university in Nebraska for LGBTQ students in 2019!

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
