The mission of the UH LGBT Resource Center is to launch the next generation of healthy, proud, academically successful lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) citizens, leaders and advocates. By providing support and a safe space for LGBTQ people on campus to access resources, ask questions, and make connections, we strive for them to develop a positive self-image and a sense of optimism about their future as a member of the LGBTQ community. Through visibility and education, we seek to create an environment of LGBTQ acceptance and inclusion for the entire campus community.

Our Synopsis
The University of Houston LGBT Resource Center provides five main programs; Peer Mentoring, Speakers Bureau, Discussion Groups, Cougar Ally Training, and Educational Student Programs, as well as three major student groups for both Allies and LGBT Students. GLOBAL, which is a social focused group that meets once a week; Gamma Rho Lambda, a Queer and Ally sorority; and oSTEM, a student group for those who want to be out in the STEM majors. These programs and groups provide students with a sense of community, where they can gain support and validation while building a strong connection to the University.

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
